Scale Flying Explained

Especially for the newcomer it is highly recommended that any competitor becomes familiar with the FAI F4 rules.
If you need assistance, reach out to the ASA.

F4C:

F4C is considered the master class of scale model competition.

This class has a static component that contributes 50% towards the score and the remaining 50% is made up by the flying component.

Any type of model build can be entered but you must declare all the items that were not built by you on the declaration form.

To maximise the static score a model designed and built from scratch by the pilot of the model is the best option.

The flying component has a maximum of ten manoeuvres. Four of the ten manoeuvres are compulsory. Take off, 360 descending circle, figure 8,  and landing.

The remaining 6 manoeuvres need to be chosen by the pilot from the FAI rule book under class F4. The choice of manoeuvres must be prototypical to the subject aircraft and maximise the aircrafts capabilities.

Example: aerobatic manoeuvres for a aerobatic aircraft and non-aerobatic manoeuvres for a none aerobatic aircraft.

You can choose two manoeuvres not listed in the F4 rules that are prototypical to the aircraft, but you must provide evidence and a diagram of the manoeuvres.

If three rounds of competition are flown the best two rounds are averaged, then added to the static score and normalised for a final result.

F4H :

F4H is the same as F4C in everyway except for the static component.

In F4H the static score contributes 25% of the total score and the minimum requirement is that you must cover, detail , and paint the aircraft.

For maximum static results you can build the aircraft from a kit or plans.

The requirements for static judging documentation are also different with a strict maximum for five photographs allowed along with a 3 view.

The emphasis in F4H is more on the flying component and less on the static score.

With exception of the weight the flying score carries all other aspects of the flying scores are the same as F4C.

Flying only:

This class is as its name says flying only.

The model needs to look like the full size and have a pilot but there is no static judging.

All flying rules are the same as F4C and H.

This class is designed to be more relaxed and slightly easier to be a part of as there is not a builder of the model rule.
