The step by step process to becoming a HMI
Are you interested in becoming a Heavy Model Inspector?
The committee has decided to move HMI applications online to assist in the processing of applications.
We expect this to provide clarity to the applicant, save time for the committee and provide a streamlined and timely overall service.
It is important that you read through all the information presented here to familiarise yourself with what is required and prepare in advance.
The better your application the easier it is to process.
The steps to becoming a HMI
This application process is for MAAA HMI endorsement for;
Fixed Wing Inspector (7-25Kgs) Aircraft Inspector FW25 or
Rotary Wing Inspector (7-25Kgs) Aircraft Inspector RW25.
The process to becoming a heavy model inspector requires the following qualifications and is made up of 8 main steps
Qualifications
MAAA Fixed Wing Inspector (7-25Kgs) Aircraft Inspector FW25 (Includes Gliders)
Have 5 years experience in constructing and operating fixed wing models
over 7Kgs in weight. In the event of exceptional circumstances, experience of
less than 5 years may be considered by the Ordinary Member/MAAA
provided sufficient justification is provided.
Have demonstrated knowledge of inspection requirements for Fixed Wing
Large Models as per MOP015.
Be of Gold Wings standard for Power Fixed Wing aircraft.
MAAA Rotary Wing Inspector (7-25Kgs) Aircraft Inspector RW25
Have 5 years experience in constructing and operating (60 size and above)
rotary wing models. In the event of exceptional circumstances, experience of
less than 5 years may be considered by the Ordinary Member/MAAA
provided sufficient justification is provided.
Have demonstrated knowledge of inspection requirements for Rotary Wing
Large Models as per MOP015.
Be of Gold Wings standard for Rotary Wing aircraft.
The 8 Steps
Step 1. Reading and Understanding the procedures of HMI MOP006 – Appointment and reappointment of Inspectors
Step 2. Completion and endorsement by your club of Application Form MAAA003
Step 3. Completion and Submission of Resume online
Step 4. Initial Assessment of the application
Step 5. Suitable Applicants will be invited to take the quiz
Step 6. Attend an appointment with a nominated HMI for trial inspector test and training.
Step 7. HMI application endorsement at VMAA state level
Step 8. HMI application endorsement by the MAAA
STEP 1
Download MOP006
The first step in the process is to download MOP006.
Once you have done this, take the time to read it and fully understand it.
This is the MOP that your processes and decisions will be based around.
It may even be a good idea to have a copy with you in print or digital form.

STEP 2
Download The MAAA Application Form
The second step is to download the MAAA Application Form, FORM003.
Fill this form out, get it endorsed by your club, scan it and save somewhere where you can easily find it and be ready for upload. The file Format needs to be JPEG.
Maybe set up a special folder on your pc for the application process.

STEP 3
Complete your Resume online
This online resume will take some time, so our suggestion is to read it and understand what is required. Prepare your information and images in advance.
Once you have done this and are ready to go then feel free to start the process.
Please note that you cannot save half way through this process.
One suggestion is to have your answers pre written in say word or note pad, ready to be copied and pasted into the corresponding text areas.
You will also need to upload your signed endorsed application form at this time.
If you do not have a scanner, you can take photo of it and upload that image. Please make sure the camera is centered, and that it it easy to read.
We also ask you to change your image names to that of the model number you are presenting and uploading. Again, files need to be jpeg.

STEP 4
Initial Assessment of your application
Step 4 is an internal process to the VMAA where the State Heavy Model inspector makes an initial assessment of your application. This process can take some time and there is a general expectation that this would take about 2 weeks.
If your application is sound and you are deemed a suitable candidate you will progress to Step 5.
STEP 5
You are Invited to take the quiz
Step 5 is the HMI Quiz. Once your application and resume has been received and reviewed as suitable to take the next step, you will be invited to take the Online HMI Quiz.
The quiz is an easy to follow multiple choice style Q&A and is designed to get an understanding of your current knowledge and give you and understanding of the role.
It is not the end of the world if you get some answers wrong, as these can be addressed in Step 6.
STEP 6
You have an appointment
The SHMI will contact you to make an appointment to meet with a nominated HMI to participate in a trial Heavy Model inspection. This may also include some additional training.
STEP 7
VMAA Endorsement
Subject to receiving a recommendation by the SHMI, your application is presented to the VMAA Committee for endorsement. The Committee meets on the second Thursday of every month.
The VMAA will then forward the endorsed application to the MAAA.
STEP 8
MAAA Approval
Subject to receiving an endorsement from the VMAA, your application is then sent to the MAAA for approval. The MAAA meets once a month.
Once the application is approved, the applicant will be advised in writing via email.
The HMI Listing on the VMAA website will be updated.

Q. How long does the whole process take?
A. We plan on less time than before the online application was available.
The time can vary depending on availability for the appointment and when when the process starts relative to the VMAA and MAAA meetings where sign off occurs.
Important Tips
Please read as this may make the process easier.
If you are thinking of applying in the future, start taking photos now, especially when you are working on your models and cowls are off etc.
Consider setting up a separate folder to save a COPY of your images and text files ready for the Resume process.
Think about what software you are going to use to resize your images.
